Our Town is a 1938 three-act play by American playwright Thornton Wilder. With its focus on the precious moments in everyday life, the story is set in a fictional small-town between 1901 and 1913, told through the everyday life of its citizens. For them, life is sweet. The doctor makes house calls, the teenage boy delivers the paper and the Boy-Next-Door meets the Girl-Next-Door. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a heartwarming and deeply moving reminder to appreciate life while one has it and to relish every moment – no matter how mundane it seems – for it is those small moments that are truly miraculous.
The play follows the lives of two young neighbors in a small town, Emily and George, who fall in love. Our Town’s production also coincided with political problems in Europe that would eventually become World War II. For audiences, Wilder’s play was an escape from international conflict and a retreat to small town America. This Pulitzer Prize winner’s enduring power lies in asking audiences to consider life’s biggest questions in ways that are freshly challenging today, even as it creates an ordinary New England village onstage, circa 1900.
